In our humble opinion here at Underground double H HQ, our tiny little island produces some of the best hip hop the human race has to offer. This phenomenon of prolific poetry and powerful production we churn out is largely due to the connectivity and community of the culture. Collaboration is one of the stronger roots of hip hop family tree and goes hand in hand with the DIY homegrown attitude that serves us so well. Popping up on the screen last night was a new release from some of our connections that we didn't even know were acquaintances. Ladies, gents and b-boys we present to you... Won't Go Far by Sire, Jonie D & Phil Jeong, produced by Vice Beats.

Out on the independent and hard working Noble Throne label the track is a great example of UK twang. The man behind the label and one half of the MC tag team Sire explains... "The concept was to focus on people who chose to live a life of behaviours that won't get them very far and tend to have a knock on affect, leading to more negative consequences. The chorus was inspired by Kool G Rap's amazing track Fast Life."

The beat produced by Wordplay Magazine's very own Vice Beats is slicker than crude oil and has more vibe than a vibraphone. Both MCs hit their bars like they're determined to raise it. Honest and hard hitting, they lay lyrics like the stalwarts of the scene that they are. Add in the luscious vocals of Phil Jeong and the whole track seems to merge together into an audio sanctuary for the sick and exhausted.

The crew carry their message well within the release and clearly in this circumstance the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. All bring their A-game and the result is a beautiful example of both the talent the UK has to offer and of their love for the golden era sound that influenced them so much.
